Equine Hoof Wall Deformation: Novel Aspects Revealed

نویسندگان

چکیده

The equine hoof wall has a unique hierarchical structure that allows it to survive high-impact scenarios. Previous authors have explored the compressive, viscoelastic, and fracture control properties of suggested this complex plays vital role in hoof's behavior. However, link between behavior been made primarily with use post-fracture analysis. Here, periodic microcomputed tomography scans are used observe temporal meso microstructures during compression, fracture, relaxation. These results shed light on structural anisotropy how its hollow tubules behave when compressed different directions, at hydration levels, various locations within wall. tubule bridges compression is also reported for first time. This study elucidates several phenomena, including way cracks deflected interfaces bridging, arresting, fiber bridging. Finally, relaxation tests show cavities can regain their shape after compression.

Strain-rate-dependent mechanical properties of the equine hoof wall.

The mechanical properties of fully hydrated equine hoof wall were examined at various loading rates in compact tension (CT) fracture, tensile and three-point bending dynamic tests to determine possible effects of hoof wall viscoelasticity on fracture toughness and tensile parameters. Four cross-head rates were used in CT tests: 1.7 x 10(-5), 1.7 x 10 (-3), 1.7 x 10(-2) and 2.5ms-1; four strain ...

The modulus of elasticity of equine hoof wall: implications for the mechanical function of the hoof.

During normal weight-bearing and locomotion, the equine hoof wall deforms in a consistent pattern; the proximal dorsal wall rotates caudo-ventrally about the distal dorsal border and there is latero-medial flaring posteriorly. The aim of this study is to examine whether there are regional differences in the modulus of elasticity of hoof wall material and whether such differences correlate with ...

Hoof wall defects: chronic hoof wall separations and hoof wall cracks.

Hoof wall defects in horses are common occurrences, and, fortunately, many of those detected present little or no danger to the individual horse. Those defects that are either presently a problem or have a great likelihood of being a problem do often require specialized consideration. Horse shoeing and farriery are ancient practices; over the years, a multitude of methods, theories, and managem...

Surface Strain on the Equine Hoof Wall in Vivo: Implications for the Material Design and Functional Morphology of the Wall

Surface strains were recorded from four rosette gauges at different sites on the right forehooves of three ponies running on a treadmill at seven constant speeds and using three gaits. Principal strains determined from the rosette signals indicate that the hoof material is loaded predominantly in compression and that the wall is distorted in a regular, repeatable manner at all speeds and gaits....

Harmonic analysis of equine hoof form and its matched symmetry

This study uses elliptic Fourier analysis (EFA), an outline method of shape analysis, for describing hoof contours symmetries in the Catalan Pyrenean Horse (“Cavall Pirinenc Català”, CPC), a breed from the Spanish Pyrenees. Hoof outlines of 54 limbs (26 forelimbs and 28 hindlimbs, including the same number of left and right limbs) obtained from 15 CPC horses were compared using EFA. Symmetry wa...
